VBS Volunteer Roles
Create and manage custom volunteer roles for your VBS event, assign them to group members, and import roles from past events.
VBS Roles let you define the different volunteer positions for your event. Four default roles are created automatically, and you can add custom roles to match your program's structure.
Default Roles
- Participant — Children registered for VBS
- Leader — Group leaders responsible for a group of children
- Helper — Assistants supporting group leaders
- Volunteer — General volunteers (setup, snacks, check-in, etc.)
Creating Custom Roles
1
Add a new role
Click Add Role to open the role creation dialog.
2
Enter role details
Enter a role name (e.g., "Craft Coordinator", "Music Leader") and an optional description explaining the role's responsibilities.
3
Create the role
Click Create to add the role to your event.
Tip
Roles appear in the order shown on the page. Use the arrow buttons to reorder them as needed.
Editing and Deleting Roles
1
Edit a role
Click the pencil icon next to any role to update its name or description.
2
Delete a role
Click the trash icon to remove a role. A usage badge next to each role shows how many group members currently have that role assigned.
Warning
You cannot delete a role that is currently assigned to group members. Remove the assignments first, then delete the role.
Importing Roles from Another Event
1
Open the import dialog
Click Import from Event to import roles from a previous VBS event.
2
Select the source event
Choose a past VBS event from the dropdown. The import automatically skips any role names that already exist in your current event.
3
Import the roles
Click Import Roles to add the selected event's roles to your current event.
Assigning Roles in Groups
Roles are assigned to volunteers within the Groups page. When you add an adult to a group, you can assign them a specific role (e.g., Leader, Helper). See the VBS Groups & Badges article for details on assigning volunteers to groups.
Permissions
Managing volunteer roles requires the events.manage permission.
